Activism, Grassroots, Politics, Democracy, Republics, and We The Peopleby Xelan Bonn, Founder, Patriot Union of America
WASHINGTON DC June 29, 2007 America dodged a bullet, but not for long. So called immigration reform was anything but real reform and one of the most diabolical pieces of legislation to be brought down on the Senate floor in decades. It promised everything but all it would have given us was America's demise - from $3 to $9 trillion in new debt, as many as 30 million legal immigrate added to our population over the next few years, amnesty for 12 to 33 million illegal aliens, and ultimately citizenship for over 100 million people rewarded for their family member's breaking of our immigration laws and participating is document fraud. It was unworkable from a logistics standpoint alone - who were they kidding that they could process 20 million visa applications when they could not issue simple passports? The bill would have negatively transformed our nation through not only overpopulation, but culture shock - for no culture can withstand that level of bombardment of foreign cultures coming into it and competing (balkanization) for domination.
S.1348/1638 was an even bigger tragedy when it came to domestic security and terrorism. It would have left our borders open, not identified for years all those foreigners on US soil, many from countries of interest known for terrorism support, and many other security flaws. It would have been the biggest waste of taxpayer's money in the history of the country and largest false provider of security the US has ever known, and yet many Senators still voted for it.
Activism played a major role in defeating this bill. Millions of concerned and informed US citizens swamped the phones, faxes, e-mails, and airwaves of America in trying to convey to the leadership the need for sobriety and in turning away from a fundamentally bad bill - an anti-American bill. Enough of the Senate, at the last moment, came out from their elitist ether and for a rare moment, listened to their constituents and voted with the majority of Americans - thankfully!
And yet with all the press, all the talk radio, all the Internet a rage with immigration reform, CNN reported that 30 percent of Americans supported the bill - a bill they had never taken the time to read or investigate, for had they, the would have said "no way." CNN also reported that over 22% of the public had not made up its mind or was not informed enough to make a decision. In reality, we had over 52% of all Americans ignorant of their government's doings in one of the biggest and most decisive moments in US history - American remained blissfully ignorant, apathetic, and un-American - lazy and foolish to the core! It was a sad day for America.
And yet it was the largest grassroots victory of the 21st Century, so some of us who participated in the process can remain proud for what was accomplished on behalf of our country, and even on behalf of the 52% ignorant.
Let's be clear, some Americans wanted pro-amnesty and that's a political choice. It may be a choice that supports anarchy, when boiled down, but it was a legitimate choice. However, their collective ignorance came from the fact they had not investigated this bill or its ramifications on America. It was a travesty bill with only a single goal in mind - to legalize as many illegal aliens as possible and flood the country with impoverished citizens who could be exploited by big business - little else mattered to the advocates and given this aspect, they failed to educate themselves on the realities of the bill and it impacts on America and America's children.
The defeat of S.1638 was both a victory and a defeat for Americans. It showed that we are a majority of ignorant, backward folks ready to sell our sole and country to foreign interests and big business at the drop of hat even if it means that one of our relatives will be allowed to immigrate here. It means we are lazy in that we will not investigate, read, and get educated on the key political aspects of our everyday lives and our country. It means we don't care about our children's future - that we care about more trivial things like Paris Hilton.
The fact that S.1638 came back to the floor three times and ended in such a close vote tells me the level of corruption in our government is high, and the level of participation in the citizenry is far too low. Today, I am ashamed to be an American, to know that over half of my fellow citizens couldn't care less about my country or its welfare or the welfare of our nation's children and their future. I am ashamed that that we have become such an indolent, superficial society of people who, in essence of their lack of participation, do not deserve the democratic government that their ancestors sacrificed and died for to give us.
And yet in all my shame, I am relieved by the knowledge that at least 48% of Americans realize that we are a team and that many of us are willing to learn, research, educate ourselves, and participate in helping to build and protect America and the American Dream - to do it not only for themselves, but for other fellow Americans and for all of our children and their future generations. And in that knowledge, I find hope and turn back toward my flag.
I say to you all, God Bless America And Americans Who Participate In Politics - please help the others to learn, rethink, investigate, and begin participating in our collective future so that we might all ensure a safe, healthy, secure, and prosperous America for our future generations. America is depending on you!
