PUA Position StatementNote: Currently, Position Statements have been drafted by the PUA Staff as an initial starting point. However, in the future, PUA Position Statements will be created with the direct input of the majority of PUA Card Carrying Members (public voters) and it will reflect the majority opinion. Therefore, your input as a PUA Member can change, often dramatically, the PUA Position Statements in the near and distant future so if you do not see your ideal opinion reflected here, remember, you can work to change it--the PUA is ruled by majority vote. Statement not formulated yet. Briefly: The PUA backs and supports sustainable resources and fuels. We believe that US energy companies should be putting 30% of their windfall profits into discovering new forms of sustainable and clean energy that can be readily commercialized, such as free and abundant solar power technology. The reduction of the carbon footprint should be a goal whether or not one believes in global warming, as the other pollutants associated with fossil fuels, such as acid rain, are equally detrimental to our environment and health. the proliferation of nuclear power plants is a terrible idea for all the reasons that existed when nuclear power was first trying to spread across the US: 1) radioactivity clean-up and storage (where will that 50,000 year waste be stored) 2) terrorism proliferation--with more terrorists rising up an looking for nuclear materials, does it make sense to create more nuclear materials that might be stolen and used for terrorism? Thermal energy (capturing heat generated from the Earth's core that rises up to the surface in forms of steam) and tidal generators (which have almost no impact on the environment) are two alternative energy solutions that have been greatly ignored and should not be---for these two technologies alone could make the US energy independent within a decade all by themselves (current technology that needs no developing---only funding). And of course wind generators are great for many areas of the country, especially rural areas that routinely receive high winds (e.g. tornado alley across the Midwest, Mohave Desert, etc.). Hydrogen fuel (which must be manufactured) is not a clean air alternative, for it takes more fossil fuel to make hydrogen fuel than to merely use the fossil fuel as a direct energy producing source. The promise of fission (relatively clean, non-radioactive energy) will take decades to achieve, if ever. |
