PUA Position StatementNote: Currently, Position Statements have been drafted by the PUA Staff as an initial starting point. However, in the future, PUA Position Statements will be created with the direct input of the majority of PUA Card Carrying Members (public voters) and it will reflect the majority opinion. Therefore, your input as a PUA Member can change, often dramatically, the PUA Position Statements in the near and distant future so if you do not see your ideal opinion reflected here, remember, you can work to change it--the PUA is ruled by majority vote. Statement not formulated yet. Press Release of Senator Jeff Sessions: Comments on Law of the Sea TreatyWednesday, October 31, 2007 WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Sessions (R-AL) made the following comments after the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations voted in favor of the ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty: “I am disappointed that the Senate Foreign Relations committee today favorably reported out the Law of the Sea Treaty. The treaty was written 25 years ago during the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. As President Reagan recognized then, the treaty was a bad deal for America. That remains true today. “Many nations have signed the treaty, and we should of course seek to work together when it is mutually beneficial to establish reasonable procedures governing the world’s seas. But it would be unthinkable to yield so much of our sovereignty to a large international body in which we have disproportionately small representation. To do so would be a gift to those that one day may disagree with American policy or become hostile to our national interests. “I look forward to a robust debate on the merits and serious dangers of the Law of the Sea Treaty if it is brought to the floor of the Senate for ratification.” |
