PUA Position StatementNote: Currently, Position Statements have been drafted by the PUA Staff as an initial starting point. However, in the future, PUA Position Statements will be created with the direct input of the majority of PUA Card Carrying Members (public voters) and it will reflect the majority opinion. Therefore, your input as a PUA Member can change, often dramatically, the PUA Position Statements in the near and distant future so if you do not see your ideal opinion reflected here, remember, you can work to change it--the PUA is ruled by majority vote. Statement not formulated yet. Briefly: There is nothing wrong with trying to improve national security. However, when security levels infringe on our freedoms, then they are going too far. The USA pays hundreds of billions of dollars each decade for its intelligence and covert services to protect us from foreign nations and other threats, such a terrorism. The recent failures of the system simply showed security gaps that could have been easily corrected by the intelligence community on its own. However, the president chose rather to "harden" America against such threats and steal away US citizen rights and liberties rather than correct the intelligence community failings. The result is not a safer America, but a more dangerous America. The president assumes the US citizenry are collectively fools: on the one hand, it tells us the threat of terrorism is great (which we know factually is not true, it is only remote and mild), and yet if the threat were so grave, then why are US borders allowed to remain open and porous for any would-be terrorist group to enter at will undetected? The security policy and approach contradictions are startling and clear! they make absolutely no sense (unless the terrorism threat is not significant or realistic, in which case another presidential motive to remove the Rights and Liberties from US citizens may be involved here. In all cases, a competent group of investigative reporters should be descending on this story like crows on fresh carrion but where are they---have we lost our competent press corps too?
