PUA Position StatementNote: Currently, Position Statements have been drafted by the PUA Staff as an initial starting point. However, in the future, PUA Position Statements will be created with the direct input of the majority of PUA Card Carrying Members (public voters) and it will reflect the majority opinion. Therefore, your input as a PUA Member can change, often dramatically, the PUA Position Statements in the near and distant future so if you do not see your ideal opinion reflected here, remember, you can work to change it--the PUA is ruled by majority vote. Statement not formulated yet. Briefly: It is clear to see day in and night out that this nation's news media has become virtually incompetent toward investigative journalism. One of the major issues for this development is the shifting of news sources for the public from print to online and television, which has pressured their financial capabilities toward investigative journalism pursuits. Today, ambulance chasing or sensational journalism has replaced investigative journalism that once kept our nation much safer from government and other infringements and much more. The protectors of our democracy have fallen to the way side and sacrificed our country along the way. How do we know this? Well, we can look at a host of issues and aspects that are extremely newsworthy, yet are not getting coverage. For example, why didn't the major mainstream media pick up the removal of one of our most prized aspects in our society---habeous corpus---lost by the stroke of presidential pen? Why wasn't the press outraged and investigating like angry bees looking for who stole the honey? The answer could be that: 1) the press is now largely incompetent (doubtful but not unrealistic), or 2) the story would have been just too costly to investigate and report on (not likely---what's it cost to call the White House and quiz Congress?), or 3) editorial constraint, whereby a managing editor stirs their journalists toward other projects that are more in line with the news agency's ideology, goals, or hidden agenda (this has been going on for decades one way or another but usually more political than based in deviousness). Now admittedly, there could be a few more mundane answers but the bottom line is that the more press and excitement has been poured onto the life of "who really cares--Britney Spears" than on the trashing of one of our most basic Constitutional tenants: the right to a fair and speedy trial, etc. aka habeous corpus! Go figure... and the world wonders why conspiracy theories run so strong and loud these days... The bottom line is that we have w need to either get the funds and editorial constraints lifted for much of our nation's press corps so they can reinstitute good investigative journalism once again (and keep us all informed and outraged over wrongful government) or we need to accept the new reality that our news will remain superficial and hence the government free to do as it wishes---the rise of fascism so easily fomented under such a model. Lastly, let's address the Internet news... for the argument has been that if mainstream news doesn't cover the story, the next best thing is Internet news, which is the new watchdog, right? Wrong! Mainstream news media is like a big spotlight. Whatever it shines on gets all the oxygen---all the public's major attention. Shine the light in one direction, the cattle... I'm sorry, I meant to say people... will stamped toward the light. It's just a common phenomena in today's society. Therefore, whoever controls the spotlight controls the cattle... I mean people... so we have got to get the public and true journalist control of that spotlight once again if we are going to restore the nation back to good health (for the corporate powers who now control flag for the charging bull have proven themselves either incompetent or diabolical, and either case, should be removed from their lofty perch by the people--for both alternatives are unacceptable.
